All sorts of reactions result, on every level including individual acts. The Oakland Mens Group was educating people on the effects of oppression more than 25 years ago, but they also pointed out that the education must continue. There is no shortage of newly minted oppressors.

Joan's tourist did not engage in oppression himself, perhaps, but he benefitted from it, and is as likely to catch a reaction as anyone else who looks like him.

To dismiss or condemn the reactions is part of the oppression. We (mainstream Americans) are allowed to kill, rape, torture and pillage (say, in Afghanistan), to incarcerate as many African-Americans as we can figure out how, to racially profile, to Tase, etc., but if someone not like us puts a rock through the window it becomes a big problem.

Yes, it's a crime, but it's predictable that incidents like that (and worse) will occur.Larryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06742098296808508617noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7875069982976812251.post-86355948030661055562011-09-03T06:56:04.089-10:002011-09-03T06:56:04.089-10:00"For all we know, the visitor may have been p..."For all we know, the visitor may have been parked in a no parking zone."

Ya, rightAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7875069982976812251.post-65915369425554127562011-09-03T06:42:07.283-10:002011-09-03T06:42:07.283-10:00By that logic, if your not local, born and raised,...By that logic, if your not local, born and raised, you are are part of the problem.

This would include all immigrants since, Captain Cook, Chinese, Japanese, Filipinos Haole, Portuguese...Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7875069982976812251.post-51429032150446767272011-09-02T08:38:51.000-10:002011-09-02T08:38:51.000-10:00Please continue to spend considerable energy think...Please continue to spend considerable energy thinking about what others MIGHT be thinking.

I believe the correct spelling is Edi Ben-Dor, btw.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7875069982976812251.post-21370279189334958652011-09-02T04:51:52.599-10:002011-09-02T04:51:52.599-10:00Maybe when we get the right to pack side arms this...Maybe when we get the right to pack side arms this kind of attacks will cease.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7875069982976812251.post-13138112358037628392011-09-02T04:50:38.108-10:002011-09-02T04:50:38.108-10:00Where were the secyrity guards... The high school drop out rate is between 50% to 75% in most of the large cities. How the country will function in the future is a question mark, especially with the reckless policy of foreign invasions with a high cost in blood and treasure for dubious results or rather negative results, lack of maintenance of roads and bridges, lack of high speed transcontinental rail and utter lack of accountability in two party government only darkens the clouds on a country that held so much promise, but panicked after 9/11 from the actions of a small group of foreign criminals.

When the history books are written it will undoubtedly state that the country veered off course towards irrational wars on the national credit card. Just as those young angry men are lost, the country appears lost too in the same way, except that our leaders have a national credit for war.Henry Pelifianhttp://uniskywriter.blogspot.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7875069982976812251.post-5673290189852020482011-09-01T15:36:45.559-10:002011-09-01T15:36:45.559-10:00I don't see the same issues here on the BI, or...I don't see the same issues here on the BI, or at least not with anywhere near the same intensity. There's no more acting out by kids here than anywhere else. You get a certain amount of reporting bias reading Joan's blog. In other words, because it's what Joan is tuned into and writes about, reading her blog gives the impression that these things are much more prevalent than they really are.

It's not even clear from this story what the kids were angry about. Joan uses the incident as a springboard to launch an essay about her view of things.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7875069982976812251.post-58168473282337144072011-09-01T15:06:26.942-10:002011-09-01T15:06:26.942-10:00I don't see the same issues here on the BI, or...I don't see the same issues here on the BI, or at least not with anywhere near the same intensity. Young, with a resentment born of not sharing in the affluence they see around them? I feel for the guy whose crime was visiting. I'm a transplant haole here who has the utmost respect for this host culture, who married a local with a family that has an understanding of the meaning of aloha, but to this day it saddens me that when my family visits, as they're made to feel like they owe an apology to those that are angry simply for not being from here and for visiting an island that's been marketed as paradise. The misdirected anger exemplified in these two is such a tragedy, and since it's reverse racism, it seems white people can't openly say, "hey, this is wrong" without a shit ton of backlash. I can only imagine the backlash from me saying this. Look at "beat up a haole day" in our schools. Do you think anyone would get away with such a thing being against any other race in this day and age? Let the backlash begin...Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7875069982976812251.post-72896522834305488602011-09-01T08:31:34.883-10:002011-09-01T08:31:34.883-10:00Don't speculate on what those boys might be th...Don't speculate on what those boys might be thinking. For all we know, the visitor may have been parked in a no parking zone. Your comments however touch on a feeling many local people feel.

Regarding Kee parking lot: It has gotten ridiculous! The guide books have lured all those hikers up the trail and county tax payers are paying to helicopter them out. When the trail got improved, it only invited MORE people to try it. I say leave it rugged and charge an entrance / maintenance fee.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
