The tunnels and easemts are still intact and the flumes that were abandoned could easily be repaired. The Kaapoko stream is a high elevation stream that feeds into the Hanalei River system. There is a tunnel system that was built in the turn of the century to move water from Hanalei Valley to the Hanamaulu intake for irrigation of the Kalepa to Puhi sugar cane fields. The water is pristine and would make an excellent drinking source rather than have it flow into the Hanalei River with the other four streams and numerous tributaries where the overage of fresh water into Hanalei bay is wreaking havoc on the ecosystem. The Hanalei watershed testified that 110 million gallons of water flows into the Hanalei Bay on a daily basis. You could easily move 8 million gallons a day back through the Kaapoko tunnel system at a minimal cost for drinking water.

Too simple and too easyAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
