They were built to feed irrigation ditches and the ditches themselves can be tapped easily... and cheaply... and without any further disruption of stream flow. They are already built- just waiting for modification to pull power,.Andy Parxhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15398587036690312685noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7875069982976812251.post-70813323522281121132008-08-05T07:06:00.000-10:002008-08-05T07:06:00.000-10:00Oil dropped to "only" $119.55 a barrel!Oil dropped to "only" $119.55 a barrel!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7875069982976812251.post-54294157649526660022008-08-04T23:11:00.000-10:002008-08-04T23:11:00.000-10:00http://wordle.net/gallery/wrdl/105798/KauaiEclecti...http://wordle.net/gallery/wrdl/105798/KauaiEclecticAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7875069982976812251.post-12225790572399224162008-08-04T22:04:00.000-10:002008-08-04T22:04:00.000-10:00Yeah, it's kinda scary how resistant we are to lar...Yeah, it's kinda scary how resistant we are to large-scale changes. Yet we're at a precipace and we better do something quick.

Unfortunately, individualism makes it difficult to engage in collective solutions, which is exactly what's needed.

But I think the more we hear about sucesses around the world the more folks will begin to accept that these changes are possible.Katyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09145011324294730195noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7875069982976812251.post-63466248591054039002008-08-04T16:52:00.000-10:002008-08-04T16:52:00.000-10:00For Hawaii, waves are probably a better deal, or t...For Hawaii, waves are probably a better deal, or the ocean thermal thingy. I spoke to a number of people on an island in Scotland that has had a wave generator running for years. No one pays attention to it anymore, it's no longer even a tourist attraction. There are several types.

But we are sheep without fleece, we are led around by the noses by power companies and their bought politicians who tell us how we may keep warm. Hawaii should have been using alternative energy all along. Now a crisis is looming, and guess what, we'll still let the power companies lead us by the noses.

Neither the Danish islanders nor the Scotland folks are sheep.

By the way, the flash heaters recommended in the comments are used the world over. It's just Americans who persist with wasteful tank-type water heaters as far as I know.Larryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06742098296808508617noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7875069982976812251.post-90539618342054627042008-08-04T10:15:00.000-10:002008-08-04T10:15:00.000-10:00Building a wood fire every time you want hot water...Building a wood fire every time you want hot water??

That's a little too much "little house on the prarie" for me. I don't mind the "little house" thing, as long as it has all the conveniences, incl sat tv and dsl.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7875069982976812251.post-60088300872901398122008-08-04T09:08:00.000-10:002008-08-04T09:08:00.000-10:00Better still, put a timer on the hot water heater,...Better still, put a timer on the hot water heater, which is very common. It provides electricity to the hot water heater, for example, 2 hrs in the day and 2 hrs at night. That doesn't mean the electricity is used, but that it becomes available.

Even better, go to an electric tankless on-demand hot water system like we have (gas not an option). You don't waste electricity heating a tank of water in "standby" for when needed. You don't heat to 120 degrees either.

You use juice only when a hot water tap is turned on. A 10-position switch allows different heat temps to be chosen.

Ours saved us at least $60/mo.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
