Musings: Heart Rending

I've been seeing a lot of heart-shaped clouds lately, and not the ones you kinda have to visually fudge, but full-on well-formed hearts, floating in the sky. And that's a good thing, because the world always needs more love, especially with election season in full swing.

We also need a better approach to road repairs on this island, what with traffic on the east side all jam up for two days in a row as they work on both Kaumualii and Kapule highways and Wailua Bridge. Last evening I was getting texts from a friend who was either stopped, or moving 2.5 mph, all the way from Kapaa to Lihue. It's bad for tourism, you know. Cause “The Descendants” never depicted traffic backed up from Lihue to Kealia — or from Hanalei Bridge to Waioli Stream, for that matter. Seriously, WTF are they thinking?

And WTF is The Garden Island thinking, rehashing the POHAKU story they totally muddled the first time around? Oh, I see, it's another chance to stroke Prosecutor Shaylene Iseri-Carvalho, with “gag me” language like this:

If the end result will be that POHAKU can continue running, then consider that the program needs assistance for equipment, food and volunteer worksite coordinators, not as task masters, but responsible organization representatives.
Actually, I think I've figured out why TGI has bent over backwards to suck up to Shay. Two years ago, she went after them with both barrels blazing over an article that Paul Curtis wrote. And excuse the mixed metaphors, but they've had their tail between their legs ever since. Sad.
It was also a little sad to hear Solette Perry — the police chief's wife — featured in an attack radio ad for Shay. Solette has never forgiven Justin Kollar for not preventing the chief from being suspended, and that has turned her into a Shay loyalist. I can totally understand where she's coming from. Hell hath no fury like a woman whose husband has been scorned.
But aside from creating awkwardness for the Chief — who yesterday told me he still has not officially endorsed anyone, and was only photographed smiling with Ale Quibilan, Roy Asher and Shay at her recent fundraiser because “my wife asked me to go and I support my wife” — Solette's “I'm for Shay because I despise Justin” stance raises some sticky political questions.
Like, do we have to hate Justin, just because we like the Chief? Can't you dislike the mayor and the county attorney, yet still see good reason to vote against Shay? Can you continue to like KipuKai Kualii and Mel Rapozo, even though they've backed Shay? Do you have to like Tim Bynum just because Shay screwed him with that prosecutorial vendetta? Should you reject or embrace Dickie Chang and Nadine Nakamura because they essentially remained silent on Shay? Does Jay Furfaro get extra points because he was able to keep Shay and JoAnn Yukimura from scratching each other's eyes out?
It's all so muddled.
Still, I did have to laugh a little, thinking what might happen if Justin decided to turn the tables on Shay and employ the same negative campaign tactics. He could marshal a sizable army of detractors among her former staff — heck, just among those who have successfully settled EEOC claims against her.
And I had to laugh a lot when I heard Solette say that Shay helps “people wronged by those who are corrupt with power. Shay will fight for what is right. Shay will fight for what is pono.”
OK, if you say so. I'll just totally ignore all the evidence to the contrary, starting with rice cooker gate and continuing on through those EEOC settlements.
Speaking of which, one of those who got money from the county because Shay treated her so shitty is Erin Wilson, the single mom who moved here all the way from Colorado to work as a victim witness coordinator, only to be fired a couple of months into the job because there supposedly wasn't enough work. Yeah, and lil Miss Pono timed it so Erin's last day of work was the day before Thanksgiving, the same day OPA had a big staff party and Shay sent out an email telling everyone how "blessed" she felt to have them working there. What a sensitive gal. No wonder cold-hearted Koloa Camp evictor Mike Tresler supports her.
Now Shay is back before the Council today, asking for permission to apply for both federal and state funds to — you guessed it — beef up the victim witness program. You know, the same one that just nine months ago supposedly did not have enough work to keep Erin busy.
Oh, and she wants to get money for a “keiki POHAKU,” too.
Curious, how she's timed this to get on TV right before the election, even though one would presume she would have already applied for the dough, seeing as how the funding periods start Aug. 1 and Aug. 15, respectively.
But then, that's politics. And as a friend reminded me the other day, there's a lot more going on the world than the prosecutor's race.
Which is definitely true. So how about if I intersperse posts about Shay with posts about the end of the world?
Those who would rather check out completely might prefer this entertaining video. Which got me thinking, when people start to boycott a restaurant because it serves animals raised in disgustingly dirty and horribly inhumane factory farms, well, then the human race might be showing some sign of evolving. But we're obviously not there yet.

  2. Hello... did you forget about Justin's Best Friends who wanted to be Police Chief & Deputy Chief, Mark Begley & Hank Barriga???!!!! Darla's on Justin's campaign website, come on it's all so obvious that it was a conspiracy against Shay & the Chief!

Joan, you are a cyber bully who attack & hurt innocent people and their families. You don't realize how your blog spreads hatred in our community. You write about people and attack their character & reputation and you never even met them!

  4. Chief Perry is supporting Shaylene even though he is aware of all her dysfunction. What kind of County leader does that make him?
He must be aware of the various agencies investigating her right now. He must be aware of the many dedicated employees she drove out of OPA or wrongfully terminated. And we are already paying for that! And her going after Bynum to fulfill her vendetta - and if Bynum sues, we will probably pay for that too! And her trying to get Jessica Venneman fired from the Humane Society.
He must be aware of her driving the County car home all those months. Especially since he parks right by her.

But Chief Perry thinks his suspension was more important than all of those things put together. More important than an OPA with integrity and respect. Give me a break!

  8. Seems that Soltye Perry provided her own reasons in the ad for supporting Shay over Koller. Why should we accept your obviously politically motivated slander of her motives? You don't even bother asking people their thoughts before cramming your own thoughts in their mouths. It's getting hard to take. At this point you're not doing your political masters any favors. The whole blog has become an obvious political spin zone and, to that extent, laughable as a source for any actual information.

I'm sure you haters don't like Shay because at one time or another, you worked for Shaylene and was most likely lazy and couldn't cut it. Well, get over it!
And now you all spreading hate for Shaylene.

I know Al Castillo told Justin to run for Prosecutor, because he is just too chicken to run against her, so he convinced his puppet Justin. Tracy Murakami is heading Justin's smear campaign by utilizing her cousin Joann Yukimura to head the witch- hunt of unfounded allegations to ask taxpayers to fund investigations to make Shaylene look bad when all Shay wants to do is help the community! Tracy also called Glenn Mickens to trash Shaylene's reputation, as well attorney June Ikemoto and the entire Kaua'i Bar Association! How desperate can you get?!

  22. That is Chief Perry's wife. Reading this post, you insinuate that Chief Perry and his wife are not even on the same side. Why would you do that, except because you don't want the people of Kauai to believe that Chief Perry, our Chief Perry, supports Shay. You've been ignoring the evidence for months on end. He's at all her fundraisers, he's taken pictures with her, and now his wife is featured in a radio ad voicing her support for Shay.

It sure would be convenient for you if Chief Perry and his wife were going through a divorce right now, but....they're not. What she said about Justin Koller was dead on. Koller sat there and backed Mark Begley while he refused to let the Chief, who had been reinstated by the Police Commission, into the building, and when Acting Chief Contrades ordered him to let the Chief in, Begley said "i take my orders from the county attorneys," and kept the door locked. Guess who he was talking about when he said "county attorneys: Justin Koller. And why was he ordering Begley to keep the Chief out? Oh yea, b/c he is the Mayor's bitch.

We all know what person got the chiefs job but who is really the chief is the main question.

Makes you wonder how Moore got set up to get murdered in anahola and how that relates to Alves, was she set up for the murder of her neice so kpd could retaliate against her? That's what she's claiming (on andy parx news), who was on both cases and what were their roles and involvement in those incidents (look closely and you will find familiar names in both cases). Why did he need to lie at the HGEA rally that he helped KPD? Why did he cry to KPD to let him stay there? Why is it that while he was "helping" KPD and advising KPD then the allegations against the Chief & AC's arise while Kollar's name is on every e-mail and document informing him (Kollar) of each step of the complaints? 65. Don't attack Solette for speaking the Truth! Solette stood by her Man and watched all that happened and the Chief of course told her everything that has happened to him. Chief Perry made a mistake and thought Justin was honest, but justin's true colors were revealed, and now no one at KPD trust Justin, maybe just darla, who's the worst cop and liar of all. How can Justin be a prosecutor when all of KPD can't stand him - KPD Administration & SHOPO who represents all sworn officers! Justin is just isolated at KPD in the Chief's office, but no one wants anything to do with him!

  66. For the third time i'll try to post why Tracy Murakami got fired: It was for being a leak of confidential information on active cases to Joan Conrow and her cousin, Joann Yukimura, to assist in Joan and Joann's attempts to discredit OPA.

Go ahead, delete it again. It doesn't change the truth. I bet you wonder who I am. How could I know that? The answer is, you told me.

  67. Anonymous, I've repeatedly deleted that comment because it's not true. So to save me time, we'll leave it up there.

Because given the number of visits you make to this blog -- yes, hundreds per day -- I know you've got a lot more time than I do.

  68. I visit your site maybe three times a day on a good day, but since you are lying, you might as well keep it up

Either Shay or Jake or one of their gadoots told you this bullshit. Ask any of the attorneys in the prosecutor's office (besides Shay and her overqualified first deputy) about Tracy. Ask any of the 18 deputies that used to work for Shay about both Shay and Tracy. Ask Craig Decosta or Mike Soong about Shay and Tracy. If you were to poll the Kauai Bar Association as to who was the more ethical attorney, Tracy would win in a landslide.

Mark Zenger and Dan Hempey don't like each other (to put it mildly) but they both agree on one thing: Shay should not be the prosecutor.

  70. Tracy wasn't fired. Neither were Justin, Rosa, Mauna Kea, Shauna, Lori, Shannon, etc etc etc. Nuff already with the lies.

  71. From the Garden Island:

In August of 2010, Deleplane started with OPA and had just passed the bar exam. He said he didn’t have supervisory powers over Burns at that time and was instead in charge of organizing zone violation cases.

One of the cases related to a compliance complaint that Bynum had converted his single-family home into a multi-family dwelling without proper permits. He said the OPA responds to requests from all county departments and acts to corroborate evidence presented to determine probable cause.

Hempey sought to determine whether Deleplane’s questioning of Burns was an assertive effort to confirm probable cause for zoning violations. Hempy also asked about the appropriateness of using victim-witness testimony in an unrelated assault at the property to learn the layout of the room and the items inside.

Burns testified that he was uncomfortable with the idea and didn’t agree do question Yokotake.

Based on Burns testimony, Deleplane asked to continue the hearing until he could bring in another prosecutor from his office for the recusal motion because he may become a potential witness himself and feared impeaching testimony. He said that he would stay on as lead prosecutor in the case.

Watanabe denied the request and said the prosecution was compartmentalizing its arguments for its convenience and agreed with Hempey. The judge expressed serious concerns with the prosecutor’s office and ruled the Bynum case be handed over to the State Attorney General.

  74. From Kauai Eclectic March 2, 2012:

Humane Society Wants Iseri-Carvalho Recused From Horse Abuse Case
The Kauai Humane Society is asking the court to recuse Prosecuting Attorney Shaylene Carvalho-Iseri from the animal cruelty case against Lara Butler-Brady because she has become personally involved.

The motion filed in Circuit Court yesterday claims that Iseri-Carvalho intends to dismiss the case, which is set for trial March 11, because the agency will not fire Jessica Venneman, who investigated the alleged abuse and neglect of Brady-Butler's horses.

In a declaration, KHS Executive Director Shannon Blizzard detailed attempts by Iseri-Carvalho to have Venneman disciplined or terminated following a personal run-in between the two women this past January.

It all started when Venneman checked out a barking dog complaint involving a man who reportedly is Iseri-Carvalho's cousin and married to a woman who works in the prosecutor's office. When Venneman tried to get the man to license his dogs, tensions escalated. He reportedly called Iseri-Carvalho, who in turn called Venneman, resulting in a heated conversation between the two women.

Iseri-Carvalho later complained to Blizzard about Venneman, saying she had lied and also had insulted her by implying she was seeking preferential treatment for the man. In further discussions, KHS staff said they felt Iseri-Carvalho was making it clear that her decision about whether to proceed with the horse abuse case hinged on Venneman's termination.

Prior to the run-in, the prosecutor's office had assured KHS the case was good and winnable, and no mention had been made of dropping it, the motion states.

She probably deleted it because it isn't true.

Why is Shay being investigated for campaign finance irregularities?

Why is the deputy OPA recording people without their knowledge?

Why would she not answer questions posed by council if everything was 100% legitimate.

too many questions without any answers

  78. A desparate smear campaign by Shay, with Solette helping, putting to exploitive use her husband's postition as the island chief of police.

People will stand up, take note. Shay "ethical, pono, and fighting passionately for the rights of victims and against the corrupt" as Solette announces?

    Pono?

Shaylene Iseri-Carvalho has victimized more innocent people, and cost tax payers more money, than most public servants have, hands down.

Wonder what KPD cops think of this one, their chief's wife involvement as a key endorser for Shay?

What can we expect from KPD administration to this issue? My bet is silence.

If Shay has done so many worthwhile things for the community, why didn't Shay and Solette zero in on Shay's works that have such worthy merit as Solette Perry says, rather than go after another candidate?

This is all that would have to be done. Make one bullet point at a time, humbly and to the facts. It is simple and "speaks true volume" to the actual.

Shay's accomplishments, over the last few years as District Attorney, would have spoken loudly enough.

No, nothing but blind-siding an innocent opponent. Then, the police chief's wife is the key catalyst. Does not present well.

    Cunning, unethical, and immoral.

  79. Can you secretly tape a witness to get information on some poor guy that you happen to dislike so you can convict him of having a tenant with a rice cooker? Isn't there some ethical code that frowns on that kind of behavior? There should be.

    ReplyDelete
  80. rice cooker story is a lie. Ask Tim if he didn't have a full size refrigerator and a kitchen counter and sink in there , and a lock out. Ask him. If he's honest he'll own up. Of course he's not because he let his lawyer Daniel G. Hempey sell the rice cooker lie.

    ReplyDelete
  81. But even if your kitchen facts are true, was it apparent to the prosecution that the evidence gathered was based on an illegal search- such that the prosecution should not have filed charges?
