Nakamura to be New County Managing Director

Nadine Nakamura, vice chair of the Kauai County Council, will be resigning her seat to become the new county managing director, effective Nov. 1.

Nadine was first elected to the Council in 2010 and emerged as the top vote-getter in the 2012 race. She holds a master's degree in urban and regional planning from the University of Hawaii and has more than 20 years' experience as a planner and facilitator, skills that will serve her well in managing the county and its relationship with the Council.

She takes the place of Gary Heu, who several months ago announced his resignation, effective Oct. 31.

Nadine's departure will leave a significant void on the Council, where she was known for pragmatic, thoughtful decisions and careful attention to detail.

Her colleagues will choose her successor. According to the County Charter:

In the event a vacancy occurs in the council, the remaining members of the council shall appoint a successor with the required qualifications to fill the vacancy for the unexpired term. If the council is unable to fill a vacancy within (30) days after its occurrence, the mayor shall make the appointment to such vacancy.

The question now is who the Council will choose as her replacement. Former Councilman Kipukai Kualii finished eighth in the 2012 race.

Coral reefs on Oahu and Kauai will likely do better with warmer water temperatures as they are too cold for many reef species at this time. Just look at the Big Island reefs which are much more vibrant and have more species.

This is a move. Why now?

Maybe she can read the writing on the wall regarding her position on Bill 2491 and the long memories of those voters who want a safer, cleaner Garden Island. This new position may afford her longer job security.

Are you realy that naive? The only person who is going to suffer politically from Bill 2491 is Hooser.

Nadine is a good choice. She is thoughtful, smart and inclusive. The council has the power to pick anyone they want to fill her seat. I can guarantee you, it will not be an anti-local person, we have 2 already. They will pick someone who has at least a little association with locals, cares about locals and will respect local history and their blended culture.

People like Nadine and Gary should never serve in public trust positions.

Do you think she would inform the public if there was a serial killer in their neighborhood? I think she would take the Heu approach and protect their own instead of all of Kauai's people. Sending emails only to their inner circle while the people suffer from a well connected serial killer.

Do you folks think anyone in our public trusted positions really care for people other than their own families and skin?

The dirty cops in KPD easily track people that they want to retaliate against with or without gps phone tracking or vehicle tracking but couldn't track the serial killer on Kauai.

When you have connections on Kauai, you can get any job that you want and on top of that you can get away with murder or even mass murder.

I will run for Mayor and I will defeat the Mayor and the GOBAG.

When I am Mayor, Kauai will not lead the state in every criminal category.

F- grade for the Police Chief and you can't fire me for the grade like you all did with Charles Faulks Jr.

Board of Ethics needs serious Internal investigations done in that department and you all can't fire me like you all did Rolf Bieber.

Awake my fellow neighbors, for there is a lot of work to do.

How many times do the voters need to tell those we elect that we don't want KipuKai on the council. If we did, he had won a seat. Stop bringing him back. Think outside the box. There are many who would do a better job. Nothing against him personally, listen to the people. 8th is not 7th. First time I can understand.

Kipu Kai ran what 4 times and lost each. Council GIVES him an incumbency and he loses again. First thing he does is start attacking the Mayor and labels himself "the peoples councilman". (I guess all the others don't care about the people?) He only criticized and protected his friend Shayleen as she ran amuck messing with people and causing millions of dollars of lawsuits and legal fees. He never proposed anything meaningful when he had the chance. You had your chance already, move on.
