Musings: Wake Up Call

Woke up and made the mistake of looking at emails on my phone while lying in bed, which had the effect of a double shot of espresso, in terms of getting me up and out, dogs leashed, the three of us hurrying along, my head swirling with the angst and aggravation that the Internet so often brings.

And then, as invariably happens, the first streaks of pink in the east caught my eye, the soft halo around a waning golden moon, a flock of birds, circling, circling, circling, as one or two split off and went their own way — why? — before the rest finally settled onto telephone wires and the miracle of a sun rise happened yet again.

I stopped, I watched, I breathed, dogs sniffing, exploring the same world, in a different way. My head cleared, my heart slowed, peace returned, and I came home, looking for some good news to share.

Please go see the documentary Farmland, screening at 4:30 p.m. today in the KCC cafeteria. If you can't make it, catch it streaming on youtube, Netflix, or one of the other platforms.  We all need a better understand of where our food comes from, and those who produce it.

To borrow some Led Zeppelin lyrics: "Lots of people talkin', few of them know..."

Here's one trailer and another.

And though it's unrelated, this caught my eye:

Seems Australia's oldest man spends much of his time knitting sweaters for little penguins affected by oil spills, and beanies for premature babies.

If only the trolls who haunt this blog could find some meaningful purpose in their own stunted, shallow lives....

  1. Beautiful prose this morning, Joan. But back to farming... Richard Ha wasn't driven out of business by the anti-GMO movement. Unless his shift to the more lucrative endeavor of growing medical marijuana was fistee-induced. But that assumption would be stretching it.

  2. Thank you.

No one that I know of has claimed the anti-GMO movement drove Richard Ha out of business. I wrote:

Though they’re targeting the seed crops, their actions affect a much broader swath of agriculture at a time when Hawaii is losing big independent farms, like Richard Ha’s Hamakua Springs, and its last sugar plantation.

I hope Richard does get a lucrative contract using his greenhouses for medical marijuana. That's one crop you won't hear the fistees screaming about -- even if it's not food, either.

  4. "I hope Richard does get a lucrative contract using his greenhouses for medical marijuana. That's one crop you won't hear the fistees screaming about -- even if it's not food, either."

I hope Richard does get that opportunity, or some other one that's fistee-approved (and hopefully feasible). But I'm not so sure Joan; won't they find something to scream about? What about demanding that it all be strictly "organic"? Even marijuana plants succumb to pests and diseases, especially in Hawaii, and the news has been full of articles about the difficulty growers and regulators in other states are having finding legal methods of handling these problems.

Anyway, thanks for reminding me to get out and look around at the wonder surrounding us. I too make the mistake of reading my emails, and the news, from my bed first thing in the morning, and it invariably fills me with despair and fear for the future.

  5. You know you're on the right track when the trolls come out! Keep up the good work Joan!

  6. Glad to see the prose again (too).

I feel the same way in the morning when I reach for my smartphone to see the time and then see 30 new e-mails, hoping none of them bring bad news.

  7. Fuck the PMRF's Aegis plan!

That means more jobs. That also means more syndicate slaves can work for PMRF. That base is already compromised with the Kauai Mafia slaves working there.

    Cheeeeehu

  8. Yep just knit those little sweaters for oil soaked birds and forget about those polyclinic aromatic hydrocarbons and don't be an Erin Brockovich.

    1. I'm pro military. The best paying jobs on Kauai are on PMRF.

If that rocket launch that they screwed up was successful; it would have brought huge contract jobs to Kauai.

It still might but don't apply with celeris. That cheap bastards are trying to pay slave labor wages $13.61hr.

Unless you work for the county of Kauai and is employed as a secretary that's trying to get a 40K raise from 30K year to 70K a year. It's ridiculously being proposed in the new county budget. I guess they give good head?

    2. @1/25 7:46 You must be a magical predicting unicorn because the "new county budget" hasn't actually been proposed as of yet. SO.

    3. You donkey. It's been on county council discussions and its on Hoike. County council minutes says they've already had discussions about it last year Donkey. SO?

  10. To say the anti-gmo movement and continued pressure of anti everything groups to ban farming in Hawaii (well except their romantic versions of farming) did NOT factor into Richard Ha's decision would be naive. Go read his posts, there were many factors but certainly it was one.

Unfortunately, they already have one. From an article in Psychology Today by Jennifer Golbeck Ph.D., titled "Internet Trolls Are Narcissists, Psychopaths, and Sadists"...

In this month's issue of Personality and Individual Differences, a study was published that confirms what we all suspected: Internet trolls are horrible people.

Let's start by getting our definitions straight: An Internet troll is someone who comes into a discussion and posts comments designed to upset or disrupt the conversation. Often, in fact, it seems like there is no real purpose behind their comments except to upset everyone else involved. Trolls will lie, exaggerate, and offend to get a response.

What kind of person would do this? Some Canadian researchers decided to find out....

Welp, Ms Joan...methinks that many have many imaginings about you.
In my case it is respect, caring, creativity and perceptive thinking. And gooder writing than any else people.
You are in the middle of the mix. And I imagine you have doing moocho soul searching.
But, I don't imagine you dreaming of Da Hoos in bun-huggers or a County of Kauai/HAPA sponsored hot-pink thong.

My response has nothing to do with the pay issue you brought up, but rather with your last little sentence. If you've ever worked as, or know someone who has worked as a secretary in a government agency, you would realize that they may not be at the forefront getting all the credit, but they are definitely cleaning up, and taking care of all the shit that rolls down that hill. Some of them have been doing it for 30 plus years. Most of those county departments would completely fall apart without them. You probably have no clue how many of them work late hours to make sure deadlines are met, paperwork is filed, correspondence is mailed out, and all the other back of the house stuff is taken care of so that their BOSSES look good and don't have to worry. Seriously! Have some fucking respect!

    1. It's called job duties and responsibilities. It comes with the territory.

If they don't like what they do then get another job.

I guarantee that they ain't cleaning shit because the county have nearly 1500 employees and half of them clean or are hired as cleaners.

I don't have any respect for hooh ass slaves that collect county welfare checks.

I believe in job performance and you are paid for what you know and what you accomplish instead of who you know and who you blow.

The great workers at the county don't have to worry because the comment is not about them but about the wasted do nothing salaries.

So if you do all the work lets get rid of the boss who gets $100,000+ a year bump your pay to $60,000 a year and we the tax payers save $70,000 a year..everyone wins..execpt for the unqualified appointed person

  16. @11:22 - yes, lets. Now, tell me HOW EXACTLY to do just that and maybe we can start getting things to change.

    1. The audit of the county of Kauai is evidence that there is fraud, waste and abuse in the hiring process. This can be a way that the county can take itself to court against the illegal hires. The nepotism has to end. The county sued itself to raise taxes on its own people so the county should sue itself to fire those who aren't qualified to receive the salaries of the jobs they received illegally.

There is evidence of fraud, waste and abuse on the county of Kauai in the HR dept for nepotism and cronyism. All one has to do is sign a petition to have the federal government clean up the mess if the county and state is impotent in this matter.

Seriously! think before you talk. put yourself in their (boss / Secretary) shoes, figure out how their system work of paper shoveling / hierarchy structure.

I'm not 7:57 a.m. but you've got to be kidding with your remarks.

No respect. you don't like what's going on. Put your application in with the County of Kauai. prove your worth! instead of your worthless negative attitude.

You've got to be the best / greatest hindsight leader we've got on this island.

    Freaking Amazing!

you still blowing wind making all our hair look nice blowing in the wind.

Get involved. make changes in the system.

Whistle blow instead of just blow!

Seriously all 1,500 not worth anything. Start putting your time in the system and get everyone out.

WAIT! you may be on to something. County collects all the taxes from the newbies and all the million dollar estates and the middle and low income people, spend it on salaries for the locals in the county system.

Wow, I've never thought about that way. No wonder you're pissed.

I'm ok with this thinking. I've got family and a lot of friends in the County Government. Maybe you should get yours too!

    Just saying.

    1. I'm better than a county worker.

It not a badge of honor like it use to be.

The nepotism has degraded that privileged position now it's become nothing more than a family reunion position.

    2. The whistle already blew with the last 2 audits that found the county of Kauai inept and corrupt.

The whistle already blew with the GAS theft.

The whistle already blew when the Mayor gave money and illegally funding a private (friends) business (Princeville shuttle 150K for 3 months of BS).

The Mayor and the council cronies wants to raise the GE tax but what has the Mayor done with Hundreds of millions of dollars while he was in office?

He'll be in office for 10 years and nothing has really been done since he has taken office.

      Oh wait.

All his family and friends have county welfare checks and that's his biggest accomplishment? Get the F%^K out of here with that nonsense.

  19. The county has some very dedicated people working there, they deserve our thanks, not to be ridiculed. And in every business, there are secretaries that support the work of their bosses, that is their job and why not pay them a living wage for the work they do? As a small island, we are dependent on the county for services and I would much rather they hire local people than outsiders. There are many well qualified people in county government as well as some duds, but most of the people do a good job.

  20. I fully agree with 2:55. But 2:08 and every post he / she had today has been ignorant of any business system. N when you give this person a chance to make a difference, 2:08 makes a difference with a nose high in the air. I'm better than you county workers!

Typical of all the negative bs that's been going on since 2491.

Instead of going through the process, the negatives want a quick fix not knowing the process and it's complexity.

  22. 8:39 p.m. UUUUUUUUUUU! great come back! I'm a local person, respecting the local people working for our island. No, I don't work for the County of Kauai. But I do a lot of community service for the COK for Kauai's Kids. Over 30 year of it.

since you don't know the system.

get in and make a difference from the inside. or stay out and butt out, or at least!!! stop you generalized negative comments about people you really don't know or care about.

It's hump day, enjoy it. get ready for a great weekend. Because it's always a great weekend on perfect Kauai (rain or shine).
