Musings: No Surprise

It's summertime, which means hunting for yellow lilikoi as if they were Easter eggs amid the fallen branches and monstera vines, drying thick slices of papaya because I've got more fresh than I can handle, watching the bees in their frantic, yet orderly, quest to bring in the nectar.

And since it's an election year, it means political fundraisers, forums and fliers. Though the tendency is to toss the literature unread in the recycling bin, you can sometimes glean information about where their pointed little heads are really at. Take Mufi Hanneman's most recent flyer, for example.

First thing that struck me was, where are the haoles? The big Muff's got photos of nine people endorsing him and only one looks possibly like a haole. So I immediately think, OK, he's decided to pander to the local vote, which tells me he doesn't give a shit about a big chunk of the state's population. Just the kind of guy I want to have as my representative in Congress.

I look at some of those faces supporting him — Phil Tacbian, the biggest dud on KIUC; Mike Tresler, the guy who coldly evicted folks at Koloa Camp on behalf of Grove Farm, Sen. Ron Kouchi, nuff said. Further solid proof that he's not my candidate. Then I see that former Mayor Maryanne Kusaka is co-chair of his statewide campaign. This is the woman who actually said to me, in front of my former husband and his parents, all local Japanese, “I didn't know you had local connections. I'll have to be nicer to you.”

Oh, and let's not forget the way she pulled off the county inspector who was trying to crack down on Jimmy Pflueger's illegal grading at Kaloko.

When you've got someone like Maryanne chairing your campaign, it speaks volumes about your values — or lack thereof.

Let's face it: Mufi is a good old boy to da max.

So yeah, Tulsi Gabbard is gonna get my vote. Some people don't like her because of her dad, Mike Gabbard, and his homophobia, but I'm not gonna hold that against her. I certainly didn't share my father's political views, and besides, Tulsi has come out strongly in favor of equal rights for all. I didn't know much about Tulsi until I heard her on KKCR, where she said she had become strongly anti-war after serving two combat deployments in the National Guard and wants to immediately end the war in Afghanistan.

Plus she's an environmentalist, and we need more women in Congress. I know some people like Esther Kiaaina, but she ain't gonna win, so you gotta face reality and recognize that a vote for her is essentially a vote for Mufi.

In other matters, I noticed that attorney Dan Hempey got the Intermediate Court of Appeals to overturn a drug possession conviction that Judge Randal Valenciano presided over. Way to go, Dan. Looks like the 95% conviction rate that Prosecutor Shaylene Iseri-Carvalho hypes — and I'll be looking at some of those bogus crime stats in an upcoming post — just took another hit. Kinda makes you wonder how many more convictions could be overturned if attorneys had the time and compassion to follow through.

What blew my mind, though, was the guy supposedly had .009 grams of methamphetamine, yet Randal sentenced him to five years in prison for third degree promotion of a dangerous drug. Do you know what a teeny tiny amount that is?

So the state is spending hundreds of thousands of dollars — actually, probably millions — to convict and incarcerate people for possessing essentially crumbs, yet virtually nothing on rehab. As a friend noted the other day, if the Mayor can seize Mike Sheehan's boatyard, surely he can find a location for an adolescent drug treatment center on this island.

Madness. Fricking madness.

And finally, it seems that Kauai tourism isn't the only business that's booming. Yeah, the U.S. is looking at a 70 percent increase in weapons sales to foreign nations this year. Some $50 billion have already been sold this year. When you consider the kind of carnage we're supporting around the world, the Aurora massacre is small potatoes — and no surprise.

  1. Congratulations to Hempey and his client, the judicial system on Kauai is corrupt with colleagues making back room deals.

Someone is paying attention to the lack of law and order on Kauai.

If you or anyone you know has been retaliated against, wrongfully convicted by collusion, your constitutional rights violated by conspiring parties, and been a subject to harassment and intimidations, you can seek help from the AG, Justice Dept, ODC, Judicial Commission, FBI, Carcle, ACLU, and all sorts of honorable judicial people Kauai lacks there of.

Well with the recent arrest of Postman Hamamura as a fast and furious arms dealer on Kauai, the FEDS only scratched the surface of the problems on Kauai but at least they're scratching. Now the FEDS needs to go down his email, telephone, mail, family and friends list to find out who else got illegal unregistered dangerous firearms that is a deadly threat to the safety and lives of everyone on Kauai.

  5. The mayor has actually selected Isenberg Tract as the new site for an adolescent treatment program. Since I live here, I followed the community meetings held about it. The majority of the neighborhood was against it.
A lot of the information disseminated was incorrect or sketchy. Anyway, Bernard made the hard (?) choice and picked Isenberg anyway. How about some hard choices to site a new dump.

The county of Kauai's coroners office needs to be investigated, unattended deaths, murders made to look like suicides, superficial wounds and overdose are their Evil deeds.

    COUNTY INVESTIGATION HALTED BY MAYOR

An anonymous complaint to the Kauai County that Pflueger was grading without permits in 1997 also was largely ignored. A county engineering inspector checked the site from afar and told Pflueger to "stop work immediately." But Pflueger didn't stop and instead, the inspector was called into see then Mayor Maryanne Kusaka where county documents reveal he was clearly told to stay away from Pflueger.

    Maryanne Kusaka

Pflueger told Hawaii Reporter in an exclusive interview on Kauai that he gave a large contribution to the mayor. He said that he handed Kusaka $9,000 in cash hoping he would get the harassing inspectors off his back.

After some prodding, Pflueger confirmed the contribution in a follow up interview with "ABC 20/20"’s Jim Avila saying he hid it in the names of eight of his employees, but he claimed there was no deal.

According to state campaign law, Pflueger cannot donate more than $4,000 to Kusaka in an election cycle. Kusaka did not report the contribution, and denies she received it: "Absolutely not, not that I'm aware of." Neither was prosecuted by the state for the alleged illegal contribution.

A diversion program like Pohaku may be possible to run lawfully, but I doubt that Shay and Jake were lawfully running it. Did they get a cut of the $200 per person participants' fee? That remains to be seen. If they did, then they violated some law - maybe the Charter, maybe procurement, and then as a result they will probably lose their licenses to practice law.

  39. Joan,

I can understand why someone might vote for Tulsi out of a desire to block Mufi and after making a judgment that neither Esther Kiaaina nor Bob Marx nor Del Castillo has a chance of winning.

BUT, I think your statement about not holding Tulsi responsible for the views of her father is facile and ill-informed. Many of us who cannot support Tulsi are holding her responsible for HER past actions, not "the sins of the father." She cannot simultaneously advertise herself as having "accomplished" a lot of things despite her youth and THEN try to evade responsibility for her past actions.

For over a decade, she was a leading activist against gay equality, even to the point of opposing counseling programs in the schools aimed at helping at-risk gay teenagers. After the Sept 11, 2001 attacks, she and her father formed a group called Stand Up for America which engaged in the crudest pro-war, anti-peace activism in Hawaii as they hoped to benefit politically from people's fear and the resurgence of jingoism. Ed Case may have supported the wars on Iraq and Afghanistan. But Tulsi and her father were loud cheerleaders fanning the flames of war fever.

Tulsi NOW markets herself as "new and improved," as a "progressive" in favor of equality. According to her narrative, her views were transformed as a result of her experiences in the Gulf. But that chronology does not withstand inspection. She returned from the Gulf several years ago, in plenty of time to atone for her earlier anti-gay bigotry. She could have played an exemplary role in apologizing for promoting anti-gay fear and hatred and could have lobbied FOR passage of the Civil Unions bill she had so vociferously opposed.

But she did NOTHING to benefit others. She only announced her "evolution" as she was fashioning her campaign strategy for winning the Second CD Congressional seat, knowing full well she had ABSOLUTELY NO CHANCE of winning if she retained her longheld views.

I welcome conversions. If she has sincerely abandoned her bigoted past, that is great. But there are lots of reasons, besides the convenient timing of her change. Her campaign in full of other members of the Chris Butler political/religious/economic cult which has engaged in the same anti-gay (and anti-women) activities since at least the mid-1970s. Perhaps on Kauai, you have not seen these faces, heard these names, seen them at legislative hearings, anti-gay demonstrations, BOE of education meetings preaching intolerance. A lot of us on Oahu are very familiar with this group. Has the entire cult changed their minds? Collectively? All at once? I doubt it. But even if it were true, what does THAT form of Groupthink say about Tulsi's thought processes?

SO, after calculating the pluses and minuses, vote for Tulsi if that's where the math leads you. But please, do not portray the rest of us who oppose Tulsi as unfairly blaming her for the behavior of her father (and mother, siblings).

For good or for ill, Tulsi is the most unique major candidate in a Hawaii election this year and cannot be understood by a superficial, cursory impression of what she says about herself.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I had heard murmurings of Tulsi's past actions/words/etc., but had some difficulty in getting anyone to talk about the family as such. I appreciate the above post shedding some light on those issues in what appears to be a fair way. I could not vote for Tulsi at this point, either. I think the vast majority of the progressive folks on the island have been hoodwinked.

Kauai is the wild wild west of the hawaiian islands and they believe that they do not have to follow rules and laws because they are far away from the law of the united states.

The young attorneys are groomed to do as is said even if it is breaking the law and when they do, they have something against the young attorney if they won't comply with the puppet masters.

Cops that are rapidly promoted and getsrewarded awards for BS stuff have done deeds for the puppet masters. This is the game that is played to be a good ol boy/syndicate.

      Delete
  45. Canʻt argue with that.

Except that Kauai/Hawaii is "far away from the laws of the united states" is more true in many ways besides the obvious: it is still a sovereign nation...

Hawaii courts practice maritime/admiralty law. It is a corporation, nothing else. The judiciary has maneuvered around Hawaiiʻs de facto and fictitious status so well that one would almost believe it is really american jurisprudence or u.s. constitutional law. Constitution REALLY meaning anything over here- ha! they have finagled the ʻresidentsʻ to believing a myth that it is in effect.
