Musings: Grim Business

Poor Geoff “Grim Reaper” Morris. It isn't easy to endure public humiliation and ridicule, but when it comes to rampant narcissim ridding the world of those horrid GMOs, it's a cross he gladly bears.

So he made one last check of his costume:
before venturing into the lions' den — a Chamber of Commerce meeting where farmers and others were discussing the future of ag plotting to poison the aina.

You can watch the video here. [Oh, looks like he was embarrassed and/or worried about being charged with trespassing so he took the video down.]

As Grim Geoff notes, “no words needed!”

Indeed. But rude, disresprectful and downright stupid are a few that come immediately to mind. Really? You think it's OK to crash a private event and make A in a tacky costume?

And then post a photo of how your kid — why drag him along to witness your idiocy? — supposedly got his arm scratched in the fracas you created:
Waaah. Next comes the pile-on from all those outraged about the wrong thing:
Surprising to see county recycling coordinator Allison Fraley endorsing such shenanigans. I always thought she had more brains and class than that. This really adds a lot of credibility to your position, Allison. I'm sure the Council-Mayor will look so favorably upon you next time you appear before them.

Of course, not everyone was drinking the Kool-Aid:
Yeah, and beware the GMO candy. Not to mention the GMOs in your costume, Grim.

Earlier in the day, poor Grim was crying because nobody wanted to crash the party with him:
Yeah, they don't vote, farm or do anything to either help the community or advance their supposed political and social goals. But they're always ready for another march.

What's sad is when politicians fall for this crap and think they're responding to a valid constituency, instead of a lot of loud-mouthed posers who are off to the next high profile event:
#Weweremaunakea, #nowwearenorthdakota, #weareindigenouswannabees, #weareposers, #paymywaytoprotest, #trying2bcool.

Or in the case of Babes Against Biotech president Nomi Carmoma, #talkingbubbles:
Ya know, I've been thinking in terms of reverse engineering for so many years on such a definitive set of goals and it's almost like so many of them sit just before the finish line held back by little seen barriers of slinking corruption. I think I need some kind of intellectual shift to engineer my path forward. Usually the end result is so clear, the critical and specific portions, and that's easy for my brain to conceptualize the path of least resistance to the end goal. But my whole value system is transforming and rising in self examination and evaluating what tools with which I have to work. For the first time in a long time, given the pieces, I can't quite see the end goal, for at least a month, maybe two, it's the ultimate riddle. I've woven myself so deeply into a path where the compass of my logic and instinct and the God willing answers to my prayers have led me. For some reason there is a veil for a moment, I cannot see the distance ahead as clearly as I have for so many years, and I feel the curtains will rise at any time. It's just within my reach. But first I have to be able to imagine the end goal in order to reverse engineer it. Unless I can figure out some kind of way to just move forward with or without the navigation I would normally deduce from logic based on the end goal. No no, but let us hope tonight my dreams just fully come.

Hmm. I'm not sure if she's suffering from Millennial angst, or if she just got too high.

Speaking of angst, I've been trying to understand the complexities of the conflict over the Dakota pipeline, ever since I bought a ledger art painting from Darryl Growing Thunder, an Assiniboine-Sioux, at the Santa Fe Indian Market.
After he explained the symbolism of the painting, he asked if he could keep it a little longer, as some of the tribes he'd visited enroute to New Mexico wanted to use it for posters and tee-shirts at the protest. I said sure, and then started educating myself more about the dispute.

I saw that Democracy Now! has been giving it a lot of coverage, but after seeing the bullshit they produced about the GMO situation in Hawaii, I no longer even look at that site.

Earthjustice, meanwhile, is representing the American Indians, which is totally in keeping with the group's MO of suing only government agencies and milking those lawsuits for donations. Can you imagine how much hay Earthjustice will make out of supporting the Indians? Who do seem to have a legit complaint, about not only the pipeline, but so many other wrongs done to them by the government.

But will Earthjustice actually be looking out for the best interest of the American Indians as they feather their own nest? It's yet another example of an elitist group of white people using indigenous peoples for their own purposes.

And now the American Indians willl have some of the comical “aloha aina warriors” descending upon their encampment, posting selfies alongside teepees, eating their food, drinking their water, taking up space, using resources, and then moving on when it gets cold, uncomfortable or their cellphone batteries wear out.

When you've seen the liars, cheaters, phonies and posers up close, it's hard to really trust anyone anymore. With so many actors in the mix, authenticity has become almost as rare, and cherished, as silence and starry skies.

The panel at last night's event included Jerry Ornellas, long time fruit farmer on Kauai; Johnny Gordines, long time tropical flower farmer; and Dr. Paul Brewbaker, well respected economist. This was not a GMO event. This was an educational event that focused on the future of farming on Kauai. Geoff crossed the line last night, instilling fear in many of the attendees. He also endangered the welfare of his juvenile son. I hope KPD will take action against this jackass. His right to protest does not give him the right to cause innocent people to fear for their safety. This is what happened last night. He stormed the event which he had no invitation, or a ticket to attend. This is criminal in my opinion and should be dealt with swiftly and severely.

As far as his wife Allison Fraley, Recycling Coordinator for the County of Kauai, she is just as guilty for fueling the hatred in Geoff's posts. I hope the Mayor will deal with her as well.

What bothers me is that this asshole is encouraging this type of criminal behavior to his son. Society will have to deal with another generation of assholes because of it. What a jerk.

You call yourself a journalist? Then do some research. It is public information that Allison has been married to Geoff Morris since 2011 and the Council-Mayor looks favorably on the excellent job she is doing. BTW she didn't "endorse" any "shenanigans"Sheeesh Joan get a grip!

I watched the video and I looks like Geoff was assaulted by being pushed. Is that Ok with you Joan?

My uncle always said, "People go bat-shit crazy at the end of the line". Be that the end of our time on this earth, or the in this case, the end of the Anit-GMO movement. Rachel Parent's article on "The Hill" only had 3 anti-GMO comments. The rest were awesome comments slamming her ignorance, calling her an organic sill, and supporting GMO's. That's a huge turning point from three years ago. I wonder if the "Dark Act" killed March against Monsanto? One thing I know for sure is Out Grow Monsanto isn't going to gain traction with these pot smoking Hippies. Great article, as always, Joan.

Allison Fraley should be removed of her duties immediately. It's awkward enough for her to be married to the Grim Reaper (Geoff Morris), who is diametrically opposed to the Mayor's position on GMOs, but to post her opinions on social media and plaster her son's "injury" ... which looks more like an issue for Child and Family Services than something sustained at this event... as fodder to give Kauai's real farmers a black eye at this event simply crosses the line. It's time for Allison to learn you can't bite the hand that feeds you.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
ANNOUNCING STUDS AGAINST STUPIDITY!

Look, I know I'm a hunk. Chicks can't keep their eyes off of me. So, obviously, I need to leverage this asset to benefit all of humanity.

That's why some of us Adonis' have decided to start a new Chapter 401(c) non-profit organization named Studs Against Stupidity. Our Mission: To use our physiques to stop social injustice before it occurs! If you don't think a dairy belongs in your aina, call us up and we'll strike poses with cow patties grossing us out. You want to show support for packs of untrained hunting dogs used as pig fodder barking all night? We'll do a photo-op pretending to be totally-ripped evil-doers robbing kennels of adorable puppies. Do you find County Council meetings too long and boring? At absolutely no cost we'll get nearly naked, interrupt, preen, and garner total adulation to press home the point!

If you have an issue with anybody about anything contact SAS ASAP and we'll gladly use it to call attention to ourselves. Our beef and bronze are always at the disposal of a good cause and a good time (if you know what I mean)!

@9:20 It's a satire, making fun of the Babes.

I was present at the meeting. The only child who was traumatized from the grim reaper incident was that little baby in the video. Is it now okay to scare little babies to promote your own agenda? What a ridiculous scene.

9:36 No is not satire. It is bad satire.

We are all entitled to our opinions and beliefs. That is why we live in this great county, but there is a time and place to show how you feel. Be respectful of others. Barging on and event that really wasn't about GMO was not the place.

Teaching our children right and wrong is important. Showing them that what you believe in will help shape them to good adults. Putting your child in the middle of your mess is right. Allison, you say that you were proud of your son for standing up...but I cannot say that I am proud of you for allowing him to be there. I don't know about you, but if someone was hurting my child like you and group are stating, why where you sitting in your chair while it was all going on? Why was the Reaper more concern about yelling then protecting his son? If my child was being assaulted, I would be the first one out of my seat to protect him. Shame on you!

I was at the meeting. The cross-dressing thug in the black dress, after primping before the hotel bathroom mirror, frightened an infant to tears with his mad prancing and his yelling.
He managed to interfere with a fact-based, calm conversation about support for local agriculture, including small farmers, flower farmers, fruit growers, coffee growers and seed farmers. Exactly the kind of conversation the whole island has been waiting for.
Ah, but this is guerilla theater, and to hell with propriety, with aloha, and with infant victims. They're just grist for the anti mill. The end justifies the means.

The reason no one went with him is because the GMO issue is no longer an issue. People are wising up and even those who previously believed the obviously unsupported claims are turning towards the truth. The grim reaper will die a horrible death. He is not a messenger, but a fool in a costume. This is what they do, instill fear and misinformation, they do not engage in any meaningful discussion to help pave the way to the future. The truth is they are trying to destroy the future of Kauai, not save it.

Unknown said...

Assault charges? That is a laughable accusation. How about trespass charges against the reaper? If you beleive that, then please go back to school and retake civics class.
Assault: Definition

The definitions for assault vary from state-to-state, but assault is often defined as an attempt to injure to someone else, and in some circumstances can include threats or threatening behavior against others. One common definition would be an intentional attempt, using violence or force, to injure or harm another person. Another straightforward way that assault is sometimes defined is as an attempted battery. Indeed, generally the main distinction between an assault and a battery is that no contact is necessary for an assault, whereas an offensive or illegal contact must occur for a battery.

Assault: Act Requirement
Even though contact is not generally necessary for an assault offense, a conviction for assault still requires a criminal "act". The types of acts that fall into the category of assaults can vary widely, but typically an assault requires an overt or direct act that would put the reasonable person in fear for their safety. Spoken words alone will not be enough of an act to constitute an assault unless the offender backs them up with an act or actions that put the victim in reasonable fear of imminent harm.

Assault: Intent Requirement
In order commit an assault an individual need only have "general intent". What this means is that although someone can't accidentally assault another person, it is enough to show that an offender intended the actions which make up an assault. So, if an individual acts in a way that's considered dangerous to other people that can be enough to support assault charges, even if they didn't intend a particular harm to a particular individual. Moreover, an intent to scare or frighten another person can be enough to establish assault charges, as well.

Thought is dreadful that Buley's article on the jumper did not give warning that jumping off the falls is a big no no and if the visitors were not there, this idiot would likely not have survived. The editor is a bit crim for not giving safety warnings as he glorifies the insane jumper.

Anonymous said...

10:56 Thanks for the cut and paste to take up space. Pushing someone is assault (threatening behaviour against others). Trespass charges could be filed if the person was asked to leave and refused.

The Grim Reaper's farce is becoming tiresome and, even if he and his wife do not recognize it, counter productive. Crashing a private, admission by ticket affair is hardly mature behavior, and frightening babies is not really a praiseworthy activity for adults, although one might argue that a bellowing grown man wearing a black dress and a death head mask outside of Halloween has probably not reached adulthood. It's time to retire the costume and props and find some other activity to slake a thirst for approval, undeserved as it may be.

Anonymous said...

Joan, look within to find the authenticity. Don't worry so much about everyone else.

Your obsession with the authenticity of others who organize around various causes is preventing you from supporting what you authentically believe in.

You may one day find yourself in the very uncomfortable position of wanting to support a worthy cause, such as Native American rights, but not being able to stomach the inauthentic characters involved in that cause. So you stay silent and the cause loses an important voice.

Or, there is another path to take: let go of your resentments toward people you feel are not authentic enough for your tastes. The challenge since time-immemorial is how to work with others, no matter how inauthentic, toward a common goal.

Or stay comfortably isolated behind your laptop. That may be where you find your true authenticity. How effective that is, is another matter.

Well, and there's the fact that they increase the danger level by understating the height of the waterfall by half. You might think you could survive 85 feet. Close to 200 feet, less likely.

John Kauai said...

I was on Vancouver Island many, many years ago watching some 10-year-old kids jump into a waterfall. (It wasn't anywhere near as tall as the falls in this story. They disappeared into the mist before they hit the water below.) I still often think I should have done it too, but the "vibes" from my brother-in-laws sister were just too strong. (Yeah, I know, there is no such thing as "vibes". Jeez what a lack of imagination.) Heck, some of you may wish I had since then I might not be here to post. :^)

But I did jump from the cliff in the Boundary Waters, several times, along with many members of my family. And another time into the Rio Grande. And another time into the Colorado.

Was it stupid? Was it life-enhancing?

What do you say to sky-divers? I was part of Hawaii's first 20-man. Was it stupid? Do you have any idea what it is like to touch down on the grounds at Fort DeRussey?

What about surfers? (I suck at it, nearly drowned several times.)

How about dirt-bikes that are racing every weekend on ESPN? (Another thing I suck at, but I'm not bad on mountain bikes. The difference being the first is a motorcycle, the latter is powered by the rider.)

I guess no one should read "The Right Stuff". Obviously the astronauts were crazy. (They were.) What would you give to be one?

What is it that makes you "alive" if you cower in fear about everything? I would not have jumped from Wailua (or even considered it) does that mean the jumper deserves the barbs being hurled here? I don't think so.

We live on a very "thin line" between "being safe" and "moving forward/being alive". It is an individual choice.

"Cheating Death" is what confirms for some of us that we are indeed alive.

I kind of regret that these comments were hijacked by the "jump story". I would have liked to hear more about the Ag panel rather than some side-line story that, in the end, means nothing.

I've asked Josh how it turned out, but so far there's no information on what was presented or how it was received. Kind of reminds me of Bill Fernandez and his frustration with the Native Hawaiians.

There is no benefit in claiming "the other side" is "totally" wrong.

OTOH, it is very understandable that one might only listen to voices that support "their side".

John Kauai, once again you got it wrong/it is not your freedom to jump off the falls if someone else has to save your ass. Stupid is as stupid does, and whatever for the guy, but for the editor of the GI rag to glamorize it on the front page is irresponsible and I'd say, next person who drowns doing it , Bill Buley may be responsible for their death.

Geoff Morris is in the restaurant-hospitality business. He and his family know full well what PRIVATE EVENT means. He also knows what a sign means that was clearly posted in front of the banquet room! Opening that door by his own hand made him cross a line from his freedom of speech to CRIMINAL. @! 11:45: sorry you didn't like my cut and paste taking up space. However, Antis are well known for not reading links. That beings said, the prospects of the Reaper getting assault charges pressed against the individual(s) who "pushed" him are slim, and the chances of those individuals being convicted are none. You'd have to prove there was "criminal intent" by the accused. Their actions look more like "self-defence" and; therefore, their actions are justified under common law.

There are bigger criminals for the cops to chase and thinking the Reaper has a case is laughable.

Joan Conrow said...

@2:31. The meeting went very well. It was fully sold out, with people turned away at the door. People were interested and curious, but given the short amount of time, the speakers barely scratched the surface. The overall message was that Kauai has the land and water, it just needs the farmers, and new ones are not stepping up. Also, that all AG is cyclical and there will come a time when the seed companies either greatly contract orbleave, and then AG all over the state will be struggling.

Anonymous said...

Joan, AG all over the state is struggling now.

Look at the farms that have closed or are closing. Who is stepping up to farm? We're trying to get young people interested in becoming farmers, but if the only way they can make a living at it is as a non-profit supported by grants (like Ma'o), that is not "sustainable".

Allison Fraley is the Recycle Manager on Kauai? Does the island even have one? Why doesn't she put some plastic bottle recycle wire-mesh bins at the Dumps? Most every one of the thousands of daily dumpers throw their plastic bottle into the chute.
I see no results of any County effort at recycling.
All I see is Mt Yukimura growing every day.
JoAnn had a chance decades ago to have another dump in place, but alas for Kauai, she pushed for another study.
If anyone in Kekaha, Waimea or Hanapepe votes for JoAnn after she shafted them by pushing the dump on their side of the island, they should get their head examined.
Mt. Yukimura, the mountain that keeps growing and growing..only out done by the endless BS of the Council.
As far as the Grim Reapster goes, big deal, so what, let him play. Every time he shows his death mask, people turn against the crazies that foment the anti-Ag BS.
Just another f*ckin' Haole.
Why wasn't Da Hoos at this event? Ooops, because it was attended by people that actually work. Not a bunch of his wealthy NS dilettante Rambutan growers.
Is anyone else as sick of these anti-Ag coo-coos as I am?
And John Kauai, listen to the other side of what? This was a Chamber event. The Chamber has quite a few of the anti-Ag folks. Quite a few. By the Way, John Kauai, How is the weather in Palmdale? or are you in Riverside?

At Sept 9, 1:46 PM. I had a chance to watch your video. There are a so many things that could improve that system of farming. First, what's the point of going to all the work of cultivating forest bacterial for a farming system? Those are two different ecosystems and farming ecosystems needs different microfloras. Secondly, what the point of building that microfloras and macro-floras, to then destroy it with a rototiller? You go to all the work of making Biochar to add carbon to the soil, then you burn up that carbon with tillage. That is very labor intensive and counterproductive all at the same time. Tillage is destroying your soil structure. That increases water, and nutrient, runoff. If you are truly interesting in the next level of gardening, then check out these videos. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2brHfHPusac https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1SkYQ5g2hcA

1:46 - I watched the video you linked to. I think you should look up Ralstonia and other pathogens that live in soil. You might want to rethink that moving soil microbes around is always going to be good. Also, it makes no biological sense that you want cultivate microbes with high sugar-starch content food needs (adding potatoes as the food for the microbes) as the preferred method. What about lignin and cellulose break-down microbes...? Are you creating a condition where these are being out-competed by the creatures that prefer 'fermentation' conditions? This makes no sense as an ideal system as presented. You are spraying starch-breakdown microbes... How does this help the soil? If Korean Natural Farming is to get any respect and use broadly, there must be some explanation of why these microorganisms are beneficial, and from what I can see, there is no reason why this would work better than just having good mulching practices in the field. Good mulching is much less labor intensive, and augments soil microbes very well by creating the microhabitats for them.

Finally - aren't you breaking all the food safety modernization laws? (look them up in Hawaii, FSMA, CTAHR has been trying for 3 years to make sure our farmers know and follow the new regulations) Crop production with spraying these microbe-heavy concoctions on your plant foliarly looks like it will break these rules. How long before harvest do you stop spraying microbes on your plants? This is pretty scary and sickening, honestly.

I think the chosen site at the time Joanne pushed for another study was going to be in the middle of Kauai Coffee. I am sure it was one of the sites being studied. However, I do agree that a decision should have been made by now.

I blame Reagan for the state of our economy and Bush for the Middle East, so you have every right to place at least some blame on Joanne. Still there have been plenty of opportunities since then to make the landfill decision. (unlike fixing our economy and the stupid war which voters themselves keep putting off. Perhaps the problem with the landfill is really the voters.)

It is my understanding that the new site is going to be near Hanamaulu, Maalo or has that one been pushed back also?

Hmmm... I wonder if the Robinson push to get their land designated "Important Ag" has anything to do with keeping the landfill off of their property.

Maybe it should be put in Mahalalepu instead of the dairy. /s

It is really difficult to walk that razor edge between two groups who "know" that they are "right". One ends up being attacked by both "sides". Which is kind of funny since there are hardly only 2 "sides".

When you actually talk to the people who are being accused of being "against" (whatever side) I have usually found them to be "nice".

(except for Michael Golojuch. Just to make it clear how much I despise him, I have supported LBGTQ rights for decades, but since the convention, 'FUCK LBGTQ'. Isn't it interesting how this one person can so turn my opinion?) [Actually, I still support LBGTQ, just nothing from DPH.] Just to try to be clear, it isn't the LBGTQ I'm against, but Golojuch who is (IMHO) Hawaii's Donald Trump. (Says whatever to advance his personal agenda no matter what.) It isn't so much his LBGTQ positions I'm against, but everything else he stands for.

Now, "actually talking" to them (the other side) isn't exactly the easiest thing in the world to make happen. And often the "other side" (from your position) views you as the "enemy" so they are guarded in their answers to your questions. Can't blame them since I surely am guarded myself.

Yeah, yeah, yeah: Kumbaya

JOAN:
if you don't listen to "Democracy Now" where do you get your "alternative news"? Amy may have screwed up the GMO Kauai story, but perhaps they just needed your input?

The Dakota Access Pipeline makes no sense to me. Oil is going down the same "tube" as coal (Peabody is bankrupt) and soon will be "overcome by technology" -- think Global Warming. It just looks (from here) as if the Indians are getting screwed again. Hawaiians surely recognize that.

Break ground
Bridge over Keahua Stream
Set to break ground this week in Lihue-Koloa Forest Reserve

Jessica Else - The Garden Island | Posted 18 hours ago

LIHUE — A $2.5 million project to provide a pedestrian and vehicle bridge over Keahua Stream at the end of Kuamo’o Road in Keahua Arboretum in the Lihue-Koloa Forest Reserve is set to begin.

UncleAina: Wonder whose cousin is getting the contract? I can't think of a bigger waste of tax money. The area is not "used heavily" nor do many people even visit the arboretum at all. I'd like to see the numbers DNLR: maybe 10,000 people a year? Less probably. Wish we had actual investigative journalism here because it wouldn't take much digging to find out where the money is leading- why waste money on something no one wants or needs unless someone is getting paid off. Sad we have such poor state government in Hawaii.

9:55 JoAnn canceled any chance of a new landfill when she was Mayor. Along with the lost landfill JoAnn has been a strong ingredient in the lack of local housing. She has been against so many things for so long that many people including your sorry misinformed self have forgotten.
Newcomers like you just think she is an older lady mumbling thru Council meetings. But the fact is, JoAnn has been very powerful in the ills of today's Kauai.
During Iniki she did her darndest to keep the military from powering up the island etc.
By the Way 9:55 for your further erudition ... Iniki refers to a big wind that hit Kauai a while back.
There is a litany of JoAnn's anti behaviors..including 2491, stopping Val Knudsen's great road plan, trying (and maybe succeeding) in having the Water Department veto projects based on an anti-development stance, instead of on Engineering standards. She has also cost countless hours of Council time, frustration, anxiety and nonsense. Joann's Modus operandi is to have a study for a study and then a plan for the study and then another study on the plan to have a study. An intricate tangled maze that ends in a labyrinth of endless yakkity yaks. And the people suffer.
Hence we have Mt Yukimura.
Learneth before ye speaketh.

and JoAnn is still out there opposing, she was the only council person to oppose the drug treatment facility last week, and the only one to oppose the housing bill. Call her No, no landfill, no housing, no drug treatment facility...just studies and more studies.

Anonymous said...

She hasn't been the mayor or held a majority on the council for more than 2 decades. Even if she opposed or proposed all the things that you blame her for, she hasn't had any power. But she's been able to dictate that issues get studied to death? She doesn't sit on the Board of Water but can control its decisions? You're an idiot.

Anonymous said...

And she's one of 7 on the council. Have the majority been voting with her? No, as usual, she's in the minority.

Anonymous said...

JoAnn has been behind the Zero Waste guys who scuttled the waste to energy project and have stalled new landfill siting with their insistence that we can realize the Pollyanna-ish goal of Zero Waste. Ridiculous fanaticism that is totally unrealistic for our island.

Anonymous said...

Again b.s. She's a minority on the council and always has been. How has she stopped the land fill or any other project without power? Fanaticism or not, she hasn't been making decisions for more than 20 years but some limp ds continue to blame her for everything.

Hey Geoff, I know you read this blog. Just letting you know that if you ever appear with that monkey suit around me or my family, in an area that is private, the result won't be the same. You're a punk and a bully. Kauai doesn't need people like you here. You're just like Hooser, a community divider. Hooser started this but he relies on assholes like you to continue the dirty work. Karma is a bitch and you're walking a very fine line. Wise up. You say you're just getting started but you need to know that you're a marked man. You have pissed off a lot of people with your last performance. I will pray for you. I hope that prayers will help you.

Let's put blame where the blame is due: Mel and Ross been running the show but they are simply do nothing, posturing, play to the locals, blowhards.

Kleptocracy

Kleptocracy is a form of political corruption in which the ruling government seeks personal gain and status at the expense of the governed, literally meaning “the rule by thieves.” Through graft and embezzlement of state funds, corrupt leaders amass tremendous wealth at the expense of the broader populace. Some of the most egregious examples have occurred in countries with very high rates of poverty. The inherent challenge for corrupt leaders is covertly expatriating and holding money in secure locations where it can be accessed in the future. Generally, that requires international movement of funds. When transfers occur in U.S. dollars or transit the U.S. banking system, federal money laundering jurisdiction is established. The FBI initiates money laundering investigations to trace the international movement of assets and, in conjunction with foreign partners, forfeit and repatriate assets back to legitimate authorities in victim countries.

Among the most challenging money laundering investigations are those targeting “gatekeepers,” which may include bankers, brokerage houses, trust companies, attorneys, accountants, money managers, notaries, or real estate agents. ICU investigates these international business people who provide professional services to illicit actors wishing to disguise the source or nature of their money. These insiders have unique knowledge concerning the financial and legal systems in which they operate, making detection difficult. ICU’s kleptocracy program is run in close coordination with DOJ’s Kleptocracy Asset Recovery Initiative (KARI), part of the broader Priority International Money Laundering Threat (PIMLAT) violation.

Prayers for Geoff to realize what he's doing. That his actions serve no positive purpose. That the wrong person will confront him and kick his ass. It is clear that he is starving for attention. The Hooser chants have disappeared as the red shirts have realized that they were fighting a lost cause. They have diverted their efforts to a pipeline on the mainland. The traction is lost. The novelty is over. Nothing left here so Geoff has to create a new stage to perform on. But he's getting desperate. Just like Hooser. And we all saw what desperation did for Hooser. Geoff, pick a new battle. Homelessness, domestic violence, solid waste, etc. Make yourself useful. Stop being an asshole.

3:52 Mel and Ross were the only ones who voted no to Bill 2491, which was ruled Invalid. Chair Furfaro (gone), Bynum (gone), Yukimura (95% gone), Hooser (100% gone), and Chock (50% chance he'll get beaten by Sparks or Apalla) all voted to pass Bill 2491
despite a 70 page County Attorney opinion written by Mauna Kea Trask. Go figure, who is the fuck ups?

I just wanted to rant a bit because I'm so annoyed with Mr. Hoosier! I was at Kalapaki beach yesterday for the historic launch of the Namahoe. My family and I had to move to the other side of the beach because Mr.Hooser was walking around campaigning. So disrespectful! This was an important day for the people of Kauai and Mr. Hooser wasn't even paying attention to what was going on around him. The songs and chanting of the children were being interrupted by his constant loud talking. Honestly I was totally discussed by him. Yuck!

Joan, I wish I could provide names but I can't. Syngenta is on the way out. I know of 3 people directly affected. The company has not been 100% transparent on this issue. I don't understand why. If operations are being moved elsewhere for expense-saving measures, admit it. Less than 4 months to go before more jobs are eliminated or relocated.

Voting no and talking shit is about all Ross is capable of doing. Where is the LEADERSHIP in coming up with solutions?

Anonymous said...

Ross voted for 2491 but didn't vote to override the mayor's veto.

Anonymous said...

Where is your Leadership? Why don't you run? What is your solutions? Voting yes to everything? You not talking shit right now?

Joan Conrow said...

@8:51 -- You can't provide names because you don't know what you're talking about. Syngenta is selling the operations to another entity. Yes, it's leaving, but its operations will continue. Just as BASF is leaving, but seed operations will continue under the new owner.

Some thoughts on yesterday. It was not only the fifteenth anniversary of the crashing & destruction on the twin towers, but also the twenty-fourth of hurricane Iniki. It was the start of JoAnn's journey downwards. She was the mayor then, seeking reelection that year. However, the actions she took in post-Iniki recovery were highly questionable and showed her true colors - Kilauea and herself before the entire island. Conveys of military trucks carrying supplies landing in PMRF and being transported to Kilauea in view of all the townspeople along the way. Needless to say, she had her butt kicked in the subsequent reelection attempt.

But, in this year election she was in seventh place in the primary and she would be a better choice than both Mason and Gary. It would be better if Apalla or Sparks could be the seventh choice. Only then, we'd rid ourselves of 2491 proponents.

Joann is a tired old voice that has gotten all she could out of her fake smiles and conversations. The Local People finally agree, she is fake, she listens to no one but rich Haoles and most of all, she has done severe political damage to the island with her Taylor Camp idealogy. She is a banana that is over-ripe and needs to be made into banana bread. Good riddance Yoko Ono.

Sheesh! How's the racism and sexism 11:52?

Anonymous said...

Sorry to say 11:52 is correct. Right on the button, in fact. Have doubts? Check out Hoike programming over several council meetings when Joann turned her back on residents and farmers trying every which way to help 9 of her wealthy haole B&B friends to get permits and stay in business. This was a blatant and over the top abuse of her promise to serve ALL the people of Kauai. Do not allow her another term. Doctor, Apalla or Bernabe (yes matt) are new, untainted and better choices. Dump Joann and her friends. Then they'll have to get real jobs.

Ross votes no on Illegal TVRs and BNBs. Ross votes no on waste in County government. Ross votes no on spending money to downsize County roadways with expensive landscaping, bike lanes and walking paths. Ross votes no for unearned raises for County cabinet officials. In this County, NO is often the common sense answer. As it is , we got too many yes men in County government. Ross speaks straight, no bullshit. He represents for guys like me and 8000+ other voters on Kauai.

Who the hell is Linda Bothe, she writes that Kauai needs politicians tough enough to stand up for the people in TGI. Again, another example of a Hooser type, expecting the County to ignore the ruling by the Supreme Court and be tough for the people? Linda is a direct example of what you get when you vote for Hooser, Yukimura, and Chock. Redshirt 2491 activists, that think that because you have 3500 people at a Mana March, which I think is inflated by 2500 personally, you can ignore the Supreme Court ruling and listen to Gary Hooser and his 4 other idiots that caved in to rich Northshore and Mainland Anti-GMO activists? Bullshit! Keep it up Linda, you're killing Hooser, Yukimura, and Chock! They going fall to the bottom 3, thanks to you and themselves.

Anonymous said...

Linda Bothe is just another loud-mouthed Anti saying that her personal beliefs are what the "people of Kauai" want. Like Hooser, she is either a liar or is so mislead and misinformed to be diagnosed as senile. So Linda, you're "the people of Kauai"? May I see the survey you did to support your claim? Give me a break! LOL!!! the "people of Kauai" already spoke in the primary! Now you may just STFU and take your meds.

Anonymous said...

I will accept the fact that many people were mislead and misinformed at the onset of Hooser's 2491 fiasco. Since then, science has proven them wrong. The courts have proven them wrong. So, anyone that spews their garbage today about the health and safety issues of agriculture can no longer be considered misinformed. They are simply liars and domestic terrorists. It is what it is.

Read the yukimura/chock/hooser slanted TGI, today's edition, and learn. Kagawa is about not being a YES man. He is exactly on target with his criticism of the Carvalho administrations poor planning and not prioritizing expenditure of scarce tax dollars for $100M in desperately needed road repair. Instead, they promote and fund stuff like Rice St., Hardy st and other feel good projects that could well come later; much later. You hear anyone else standing up for the working tax paying people of kauai?

Re 1:06 pm

"Let go of your resentments toward people you feel are not authentic enough for your tastes. The challenge since time-immemorial is how to work with others, no matter how inauthentic, toward a common goal."

So what you're saying is that even though an individual is a liar and can't be trusted we should still embrace the individuals inauthentic position. We should also cater to that individuals inauthentic goals because you say that is how it needs to be since time-immemorial.

Wow! You sound like a twisted my way is always right nut job.

Oh and inauthentic people never work well with other people and towards a common goal. It's all on sided, sorry to say.

Ross Kagawa is a good man and an excellent council member. We need to protect him with some solid voting in November.

Keep up the good work Ross, and don't let the biased individuals in this blog get to you. You are a man of integrity and the people will show you their appreciation in November.

@7:13 pm

Re Keahua Stream.

First off that area is a State Forest Reserve and comes under the jurisdiction of the DLNR.

Secondly the existing concrete bridge is delapidated, cracked, sinking and falling apart. I called the State a few months back to have some safety repairs made to the deck. There were holes in which someone could step into, with wire mesh and rebar protruding, that could get someone seriously hurt. When the water is running high the holes were submerged and hard to see. Plain and simple, that bridge is a safety hazard. Sorry to say but your 4wheeler guys could easily cross that Kaeahua crossing with no bridge. But the area is listed as a State Park which makes it a whole different ball game.

Next we should continue and fix the Ioli crossing and a few of the hills and behold an emergency route for tsunami evacuations.
