Musings: All Riled Up

Proving once again how easy it is to rally and rile the ignorant, Don Heacock and Adam Asquith are fomenting fury around a supposed new "Waialeale water diversion."

Uh, except, there isn't one.

Here's the crap that Heacock and Asquith are feeding the mob (you can click on all the images to make them bigger and easier to read):
Oh, yeah, let's try to turn this into Kauai's own pipeline battle. So perfect for the warrior wannabes who can't make it North Dakota.

Here's the reality:

The Department of Water is building an 18-inch transmission line that will run along the Kapaia Cane Haul Road, from Ma’alo Road to Kuhio Highway, to Grove Farm's existing Surface Water Treatment Plan (SWTP). It's being built both to create a redundant system, in case the existing line breaks, and ensure adequate water pressure for fire fighting at Wilcox hospital and Wilcox elementary school.

It is not creating any new diversions, or dewatering any streams. The source capacity of the SWTP was already determined and approved years ago, during the SWTP’s design phase, through an EIS [correction; engineering report, as required by the Department of Health] and Commission on Water Resources and Management permitting process. It allows a maximum capacity of 3 MGD. DOW is currently taking about 2 MGD.

Or to boil it down to really simple terms: DOW is adding another pipeline to increase water flow to the Lihue area. It is NOT taking any more water from the source than has already been approved by the state. It is not drilling into Mt. Waialeale, or anywhere else.

It's perfectly appropriate for Kirk Saiki to anticipate a finding of no significant impact (FONSI) for a roadside pipe. Nobody's circumventing the law.

But why bother to find out the facts when you can get the fanatics frothing and foaming just by tossing out some made up bullshit?

And sure enough, they snapped at the bait, ever-anxious for an excuse to get all riled up about something. All ya gotta do is sic Dustin Barca on it:
Gee, that's kind of remarkable, considering the pipeline hasn't even been built yet. Think it might have something to do with the low rainfall?
War? Threat to your lives? What a fricking joke.

Of course, it doesn't take long for the threats to start:
Feeling good about what you've started, Adam and Don? Are you sitting back smirking, knowing you've unleashed the crazies over nothing? Nothing but your own attempt to have Lihue turned into a ground water management area (GWMA), that is.

Because that's the call to action from Hui Hoopulapula Na Wai O Puna's Debra Lee-Jackson. Even though her 'facts" are all messed up, she's demanding either a full EIS for the pipeline or declaration of the GWMA — something Adam has been pushing for quite a while now.

In a letter to Office of Environmental Quality Control Director Scot Glen, Debra sniffs: "[There's] not even a mention of any impact of the withdraw [sic] of the water from the streams."

Mmm, that's because there isn't any going to be any more water withdrawn than has already been approved. Hence, no impact.

But don't worry, that fount of foolishness, KKCR, will soon further muddy the waters with its own unique brand of disinformation, aimed at furthering the massive egos of the hosts while  deluding and confusing the sheeple:
Meanwhile, they're busily rallying themselves for some sort of action that is sure to be misguided because it's so misinformed:
Hey, I've got a really radical plan of action. How's about you find out what's really going on before you get all ramped up?

What's sad is seeing some of these folks waste their energy fighting non-existing bogeyman rather than working to address real issues in the community.

Like the rampant ignorance that allows them to be so easily manipulated and misled by people like Don and Adam, who will stop at nothing to grind their own axes.

Uneducated taken advantage of once again. Sad.

So now you are against scientists (Don and Adam). A law saying you can divert water is not the same as actually diverting water.

Anonymous said...

You have presented no proof that Don or Adam are behind the flyer. What happened to fact based info other than you accusations?

Anonymous said...

Joan "Mmm, that's because there isn't any going to be any more water withdrawn than has already been approved. Hence, no impact." Just because something has been approved does not mean "no impact". Scientists still can't give us an answer to how many people these islands can sustain and people like you just keep coming. Was it approved before Global Warming and our drought, or 400ppm carbon?

This is really sad.

We are so appalled by the conflicts and suffering all over the world, including in the United States, but disinformation and a purposefully misleading agenda is often the match that starts the fire.

Where's the aloha?

Anonymous said...

Anger first. Facts later.

So much hatred and paranoia in some people.

It is all a conspiracy in their minds. Everything is an affront on their lives, future and culture. Oh by the way; what culture do our young men have on Kauai/Hawaii? Oh yes, hate the rich, the educated, the haoles, the hard workers since they are only here to subjugate them. That is the new culture of the youth of Hawaii.

They want to "Defend Hawaii" against everything and everybody; who cares if its not true or not even a real threat.

Anonymous said...

Wow, it is so easy to start a "war" here on Kauai. This is how "trouble" starts. Untruths divide friends, family, neighbors and communities. Patching the divide takes so much energy which some people don't have. They rather do the "hate" thing instead of the "love" thing. But nothing happens to the people that are doing the untruths. In some countries they get stoned to death. We should try it here....no not the "stone" from drugs. The stone that make you owie.

Oh pardon me I thought getting a water permit before diverting water was a law. How ignorant of me. Why would anyone get a water permit if it's not the law? They granted a permit for the Ala Wai Canal and it is the most polluted bodies of water in the state.

10:29- Dustin Barca, Terry Lilley, Fern, The Hoosmeister, and the gang all of the option of making their proclamations private to their FB friends, which is what I do. I am a private person. . But then again, I do not have a messiah complex, nor do I think the corporations and the military are conspiring to destroy everyone and everything. It's very saddening to think there are so many people who walk amongst us who believe the things that Dustin Barca believes and the outlandish conclusions he often arrives at. There are so many everyday things that contradict their beliefs. If I believed a fraction of the things that they did, I would have long ago fled for some other beautiful yet vog laden utopia like Iceland.

Hooser started the tactic of divide and conquer. 2491 brought ugly to Kauai. Remember when we could sit down and talk about things? Remember when we had the Aloha spirit? I wonder why these assholes continue the Hooser mentality. Someone is going to get hurt. These threats of violence serve no valid purpose. I wish they would stop. I wish they would behave. But they won't. They look up to Hooser as a God, and they want to be like him. This is bad for Kauai. This is bad period.

8:02 AM Bali is the same size as Kauai with 5 million people plus. We have more water. It is never a water problem, it is a transmission problem, All you folks can be happy paying 2200 dollar rents and 600,000 dollar houses on an island with more land and water than most. Good people on this island (for the most part), but Bad governance.
2:12 Dear Newbie DoucheBag - Granted there has been and is somewhat of a racial tension. Its hard to figure out with most kids today being Hapas (and the vast majority of the Loocals having Haole Blood), but be that as it is. Da Hoos...by bringing out his Fistees, the NS elitists who talk down to the locals and wanted to take away jobs, was a real mess. Screaming Haoles, threats lies and deceit. Bynum, Hoos, Jay, JoAnn, Mason. Not a care for the jobs. And worse trying to take property rights and Ag away from the Big Ag owners.
Da Hoos is still doin' it. He is not solely responsible, but he sho' gots a lot to do with it. Hi-Nose newcomers, telling the poor locals how to live. But I guess those dumbsh*t locals need leaders like Moron, Gary and JoAnn to straighten out our lives, take us off the roads, eat organic and meditate. But I notice the NS elite fever has died down. Not too many 2491 nutjobs running around. The have muzzled themselves.

FAct- Da Hoos, JoAnn and Mason with their high and mighty ideals are sacrificing local housing and roads to the delight of their NS wealthy masters. Remember...most NS rich folks are here for the weather and beaches and could give a flying corn-cob about local jobs/housing or roads. JoAnn,Gary and Moron have accepted the newcomer's LA ideals and the working man suffers. They even want to turn Lihue into a nabob of coffee cafes and cozy li'l Rodeo Drive Shoppes...only 2 million kauai dollahs getcha 13 million Fed Dollars...take away a lane on Rice Street and have neato little Buses and Bike Pathe....choke me with a sabedong sprayer, what a bunch of Horsesh*t. Take away the roads and make JoAnn happy.

Don HeadCock has f*cked around down in Nawilwili with his BS farm, taking land that wasn't his and messing with the water......for years. I thought he left, because my view is better. He trespasses, uses easements that aren't his and all sorts....just like Da Hoos, A man above the law----He should have been fired by the Feds years ago.......he got busted for using Government Copy machines to produce his propaganda ---but they gave him a pass for this stealing.
Ethnics and Ethics...we gots lots and none.
On another note. I listened to Arthur Brun in a deep conversation with a person last week ( I was eavesdropping, as usual) What a good man. He cares and listens. He has real Aloha. Surprised me.
Gary has been a little nicer to the underlings at the Council Chambers lately...he has been polite. He is evolving.
Gotta go, medication is wearing off.

Nothing? Forgot about this didn't you Einstein?

"On Sept. 9, 1924, what began as a simple arrest by Kauai sheriffs at the Filipino strike headquarters in Hanapepe quickly turned deadly. Sheriffs had been sent to retrieve two Filipino laborers being held captive by strikers in a Japanese-language school. A struggle broke out between the strikers and the authorities and, minutes later, 16 strikers were shot and killed, many by deputized sharpshooters hiding on a nearby hill. No one knows who made the first move in the incident that has become known as the Hanapepe Massacre."

The Kaapoko tunnel system should be put back into use. The tunnels and easemts are still intact and the flumes that were abandoned could easily be repaired. The Kaapoko stream is a high elevation stream that feeds into the Hanalei River system. There is a tunnel system that was built in the turn of the century to move water from Hanalei Valley to the Hanamaulu intake for irrigation of the Kalepa to Puhi sugar cane fields. The water is pristine and would make an excellent drinking source rather than have it flow into the Hanalei River with the other four streams and numerous tributaries where the overage of fresh water into Hanalei bay is wreaking havoc on the ecosystem. The Hanalei watershed testified that 110 million gallons of water flows into the Hanalei Bay on a daily basis. You could easily move 8 million gallons a day back through the Kaapoko tunnel system at a minimal cost for drinking water.

Too simple and too easy

Unknown said...

@ 10:16 While the Hanalei river system is running 926 CFM now, its normal flow is only 126 CFM. That works out to 80 million gallons a day for the entire river system (126*60sec*60minutes*24hr*7.35gal/CF). It is highly unlikely the Kaapoko stream could provide 110M gal. day by itself. Still not a horrible idea, but there's too much politics, and legal red tape, to make the project work in under 5 years.

And wrong once again!

The local tourist industry of Waialeale has promoted it as the wettest spot, although the 38-year average at Mawsynram, Meghalaya, India is higher at 467.4 inches (11,870 mm). Both Mawsynram and Cherrapunji in Meghalaya are recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as having higher average rainfall.

We have water. We have land.
We have self-entitled who have theirs and will do anything from allowing others to have a home.
If you are under 40 and don't own a home...blame Da Hoos and JoAnn. Particularly JoAnn, she set the mold. The Water Department was granted their "opinions" as being science by this anti-housing lady whilst she was Mayor. Backdoor politics at its worst and the legacy still lives.
Nowadays--Planning and Water are afraid that any permit they give out will be bought by a newcomer or that a BnB or Ag Estate will be built.
The locals suffer. Houses at 600,000? A water meter at 15,000? Septic @ 20.....
Great gawd almighty----our leaders have made it impossible for regular people to own.
JoAnn wins. Gary Wins. Mason wins......we will all be living in apartments and riding the Bus.
Oh except for the JoAnn/Hooser supporters...they will still be in their Ag Estates overlooking the sea and driving their Range Rovers.
House? Locals need not apply.
Shame.

Much of the water in the tunnel systems would never makes it to the surface on island. It leaves Kauai deep under the sea. This is why the Wilcox tunnel(Kilohana) provides water but doesn't take water from any flowing source. It is all drip water.

Bali has 4.2 millon people and a very serious potable (groundwater) water shortage aggravated by its tourism industry. And like Kauai it relies heavily on cesspools and injection wells threatening water quality. Poipu?

Kauai is NOT the wettest place on earth. The SUMMIT of Mount Waiʻaleʻale is one of the wettest places on earth.
Kauai averages somewhere around 40 inches of rain a year. The summit of Waiʻaleʻale averages about 450 inches per year.
Kauai is still pretty wet... it averages more than Washington State.

Kauai does not have a water shortage.
We have a leadership shortage.

Reminds me of the time after Inkiki, when ICE was a big fat desire for everyone.
Mayor JoAnn Yukimura ....gets on the radio and says.."Attention Attention, we have ICE in Lihue.yes we have bags of Ice in Lihue"
2,000 cars drive from Haena or from Kekaha to get a bag of ice.
OOPs, There was only one 20 foot container of the cold stuff. Lots of pissed off people.

This is an example of Kauai leadership in action.

picky picky, we may not be the wettest place on earth, but just about, sorry if 2 other places in the world surpass us, we be plenty wet here and most places on the island get far more rainfall than the 40 inches you cite. bottom line, there is no real water shortage here.

When the same employee has used his intimate knowledge of the land to grow pot and profit from public lands.

Places in Hawaii rank 7,8 & 9.

Kukui, Maui, Hawaii

Average annual rainfall: 9293mm

The mountain peak of Puu Kukui is the 9th wettest place on earth.

8. Mt Waialeale, Kauai, Hawaii

Average annual rainfall: 9763mm

Waterfalls streaming down the side of Mt Waialeale. Picture: ThinkStock
The name Mt Waialeale means “overflowing water”. The rain around this extinct volcano is so wet and slippery that access is extremely difficult. Researchers believe that the peak’s conical shape that makes it so rainy.

In 1912, Mt Waialeale saw a record 683 inches of rain.

7. Big Bog, Maui, Hawaii

Average annual rainfall: 10,272mm

Waterfall in tropical rainforest, Maui, Hawaii. Picture: ThinkStock
Despite being subjected to constant rain, Big Bog is a major tourist attraction on Maui because of its lush scenery.

The amazing precipitation is caused by easterly trade winds that bring moisture from the Pacific up against the steep mountainside.

Mt. Waialeale is the wettest spot on Kauai. We need to conserve water. Kanu suggests that when taking a bath, shower yourself, turnoff the water, scrub yourself then turn the water back on and rinse. When brushing our teeth, rinse mouth, turn off water, apply your toothpaste and brush, when done, turn water on to rinse mouth. When using the hose in the garden or washing autos, use a water nozzle to control the flow of water or to completely shut off the water when you done' need the water. Don't order water at a restaurant if you are not going to drink it.

Well I guess Joan is right! It is not a law to get a water permit. I am at a loss as to why anyone would get one, and I am at a loss why both Adam and Don are not fined and or arrested if it is a law. Is it a law or are they above the law? Since you seem to have a reading comprehension problem, even though you're talking about cops with low IQs, let me spell it out. This issue is not about the laws governing water diversion in the State of Hawaii. It is about a permit to divert water -- a permit that has already been granted by the legal authority, the state Water Commission.
